HPI is a certified Work Hardening facility as outlined by the Department of Labor and Industries. This program is designed for injured workers that are considered medically stable and either have a job to return to or have a vocational plan with a specific job goal in place.

Work Hardening is a 4 week program that begins at 3-4 hours per day (2 hours aerobics/strengthening, 1-2 hours of true work simulation). Injured workers attend 5 days a week and progress in hours weekly eventually reaching an 8 hour work day by the end of the 4 weeks, thereby simulating full time work.

During Work Hardening the injured worker will participate in cardiovascular and strength training as well as being instructed in protective body mechanics and pacing techniques. The component that sets Work Hardening apart from other programs is true work simulation. HPI provides several dedicated work simulation stations comprised of real industry equipment for injured workers to utilize such as a hospital room for healthcare workers, a sound proof sheet metal/construction room, ramps for delivery drivers, confined work spaces for occupations requiring awkward posturing, tractor-trailer simulator with air- ride seat and an airliner station complete with airplane seats and overhead compartments. HPI is able to create true work simulation activities for most every occupation including inside and outside work areas.
